26.08.2010 An interview with Parvez Asad Shaikh on Wikileaks, Afghanistan & a possible way ahead

Afghanistan is shrouded in the rhetoric of the ‘war on terror’

(gm). The recent publication of secret documents by the Wikileaks network re-focussed a wider public attention on the issue of Afghanistan, the so called 'Taliban', the killing of non-combattants by allied forces and the changes for any western 'victory' on the Afghan arena of war.

To gain more than just mainstream statements, we spoke with Parvez Asad Sheikh. Sheikh is a young graduate of the South African Dallas College, Cape Town, has travelled the region and has published several papers on geo-strategic and regional issues.  more ...

15.06.2010 Interview: Islam and Europe - An interview with Olivier Roy

Is there a "liberal" or "radical" Islam?

gm: In Switzerland, a majority voted for a ban on minarets; in France and in Belgium, the Islamic headscarf is being heavily debated; in Italy the crucifix is coming under fire. And also here in Germany the debate surrounding Muslims is often hysterical. Why do Europeans fear religious symbols or "foreign" religions so much?

The debate in Europe has shifted in some 25 years (a whole generation) between immigration and the visible symbols of Islam.  more ...

01.04.2010 Islam in Europe: The second round of Germany's Islam Conference begins in discord

Interview with Abu Bakr Rieger

(gm) Germany’s Islam Conference is entering its second round. What is the history of this Conference?

Abu Bakr Rieger: After being ignored in Germany for several decades, Islam moved suddenly into the spotlight after the terror attacks in New York and became a major theme of German domestic policy. Germany’s Interior Minister Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble recognised a vacuum and convened this Conference as a first means of contact between Muslims and the government. It was an important step which was welcomed by all of the Muslims living in Germany. But there was a catch ....

11.09.2009 Interview: Abu Bakr Rieger about money and the financial crisis

"The financial crisis is not in the slightest bit surprising"

Mr Rieger, what do you say about the monumental financial crisis we are now witnessing?

I have to begin by saying that the financial crisis is, for myself as a Muslim, not in the slightest bit surprising. It is not the fault of a few greedy managers, rather it is a systemic crisis. Today’s economic model is based on what one might call the magical reproduction of money, which means we produce mountains of money which no longer has anything to back it, and at the same time we create an unbelievable, systematically growing debt, both nationally and globally.  more ...

Question: How do you evaluate the situation in the northwest of Pakistan?

Jamshed Ayaz Khan: Actually, the situation has been very complex in our part of the world because of the menace of terrorism and extremism. (Zaman.com). Gökhan Bacık, associate professor of international relations at Fatih University, has said Turkey can assume the critical role of talking with the Hamas leadership in the Middle East, where most regimes have legitimacy problems. “There are no leaderships in the Middle East that can take on the Palestinian issue courageously and at the same time remain in power. 29.12.2008 Thalif Deen Interviews U.N. Human Rights Expert Richard Falk

Israel Bars Credible Observers from Gaza

(IPS) The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay last week lambasted the Israeli government for detaining and expelling a human rights expert, Richard Falk, who was on a U.N.-mandated assignment to probe the human rights situation in the occupied territories. "It is difficult to assess Israel’s motives for barring my entry to the Occupied Palestinian Territories, but it certainly seems to fit with a pattern of minimising to the extent possible, reporting on the realities of the occupation, especially in Gaza," Falk told IPS.

Falk, whose official title is U.N.  more ...

"Indonesians are still feeling the effects of the 1997 economic crisis"

Indonesia was hit hard by the financial crisis in 1997, so much so, that its people are still feeling its effects over ten years later. Nowadays, the biggest Muslim country is not just faced with the impact of the recent crisis, but is also entangled in the economic struggle for control between Western interests and a growing Chinese influence. Indonesia’s economy, as in other so-called 'Third World', countries, suffers from the problems of foreign sweatshops, strip-mining and de-forestation.  more ...

16.08.2008 Interview with Dr. Conrad Schetter on the Situation in Afghanistan

"No attempt to unterstand Afghanistan"

(gm). Like the seemingly endless Iraq War, the international presence in Afghanistan and the Western armed intervention which preceded it have come to epitomise the period following 11 September 2001. Here in the Hindu Kush, where “democracy is being defended”, not only do worlds seem to be colliding, there have also been a series of developments that elude the usual cut-and-dry definitions. We spoke with political affairs expert Dr. Conrad Schetter, who from his own experience has worked hard to change stereotypes of the situation in Afghanistan.  [ABO] more ...

"For decades the shadow banking system has been raping the world. Previous Governments had been forced to cover up their depredations. The bubble they created should have burst earlier. But the political elites did not have the guts. And so the abuses and cheatings had gone on until they became so big that cover-ups became no longer possible."
