06.08.2010 On the Western Sahara

When will the solution arrive? An analysis by Yasin Alder

The question of the status of the Western Sahara is seldom heard in the Western media, or at least not since the 1980s. But in Morocco, which since 1975’s legendary ‘Green March’ has considered the Western Sahara part of its own country, all the issues relating to that disputed territory are as current as they ever have been. Indeed they are explosive geopolitical issues. And yet political progress remains extremely sluggish. Many experts agree that the most promising prospect of solving the Western Sahara question remains the Autonomy Plan proposed by Morocco in 2007.  more ...

By Adil Morrison

(gm). The emergence and popularity of social networking sites has been seen as a triumph of the technological age – but what does it tell us about the world in which we live? 'Neo-Mercantilism' and the Politics of Economic Integration

(gm). In October 2008, Grain, an NGO which ‘promotes the sustainable management and use of agricultural biodiversity’ released a report titled ‘Seized! The 2008 land grab for food and financial security’. The report documents two ominous trends which have the potential to drive food prices up further and spell the end of small-scale farming.

The report explains that governments of countries which have a shortage of arable land, or with high population growths, are resorting to buying up or leasing farmland abroad in order to secure necessary food production.  more ...

Russia’s strategic and economic alignment with the Arab states

(gm). The world is witnessing an unprecedented decline of American hegemony and the rise of Russia in parallel as a formidable energy superpower. 09.04.2008 Following his acquittal in The Hague, former prime minister wastes no time reviving his stalled political career.

“Haradinaj will refresh Kosovo’s political scene”

(birn) Days after his triumphant return from the Hague Tribunal, Kosovo’s former Prime Minister, Ramush Haradinaj, is aggressively restarting his stalled political career in the newly independent Balkan state. 05.04.2008 Opinion: Islam in Bosnia and Herzegovina

A vote against isolationism is a vote against radicalism. By Muhamed Jusić

(globalia) Who and what intensifies Islamic radicalism in BiH, and what can prevent it? Here in the pages of Pulse the Bosnian-Herzegovinian theologian Muhamed Jusić initiates a discussion about the best way to challenge a phenomenon whose roots should not be sought in religion, but in socio-political circumstances. Every society, nation or religious group is susceptible to the radicalisation of some of its members. It would be naïve to claim that any group is immune to religious or any other type of extremism.  [ABO] more ...

Colourful Muslim markets in Belgium and France – by Saloua Oulad

On account of all the social and economic problems associated with immigration - as is recently evident again from the increasing intensity of the discussions in the light of the unrest in France - it is easy to overlook its positive effects. Among such effects without doubt are the colourful and lively Muslim markets, many of which have long existed in France and the Benelux countries. The Moroccan markets in Belgium are extremely well known. One may find almost everything there: Moroccan clothes, furniture, decorative articles as well as fruit and vegetables from Morocco.  more ...
